Job Interviews: Delivering Your Pitch

For every job interview, you should develop a pitch that is optimized for the particular position. A good pitch effectively summarizes your best and most relevant points. It makes you appear like an impressive candidate. A good pitch will also gain the hiring manager’s attention. It will make them want to know more about you.

Do you already have a pitch ready for your upcoming job interview? If not, then read on as we discuss the steps to craft an effective pitch that will attract your potential employer.

Write everything down

List down the qualities that make you a very good candidate. Write down your character traits, special achievements, top skills, industry expertise, educational attainment, and career goals. At this stage, don’t concern yourself with the job description. Not yet. Just get those thoughts flowing. Once you complete that list, then it’s time to move on to the next step in interview preparation.

Have a clear idea

The second step is where you should develop a clear idea of what kind of message you want to convey in your pitch. Study the job description and figure out the kind of person that they are looking for. And then, use that to filter your list of qualifications. Determine which achievements and qualifications best show your strengths and abilities with regards to the job. Ask yourself, what message do I want to send? Yes, you want to show them that you are great. But you have to be more specific. Ask yourself: do I want to show them that I’m a potential leader? Do I want to show them that I’m innovative in achieving results? Do I want to show them that I’m a committed team player? You cannot craft a great pitch if you don’t know what you want to achieve with it.

Organize your thoughts

Next, it’s time to organize your thoughts. Figure out the best way to communicate the message that you want. Some people begin by talking about how they started out in their careers, while there are others who begin by talking about their goals for the future. It’s up to you. Just remember a few things. First, be concise. Your hiring manager does not have all the time in the world to listen to your life story. See to it that you focus on the most important points. Second, back up your claims. If you say that you are results-driven, then make sure you give an example of a situation where you have exhibited that trait.

Practice your pitch

Have you finished preparing your pitch? Great! It’s now time to practice your delivery. It is not necessary to memorize a pitch word per word. You can just use an outline. Besides, you’re talking about your own experiences and skills so there’s no need to memorize entire paragraphs. Practice in front of a mirror. Speak with eagerness. Remember, no matter how good your pitch is, it will be useless if you deliver it like a robot. Add some life. Add some confidence. And don’t forget to smile.

Making Progress In Your Job Search

How is your job search so far? Have you been successful in your applications and interviews? If you’re not too satisfied with how your job search is going, then read on. In this article, we will guide you through the steps of your job search. We will discuss how you can improve your current strategy and the new practices that you can apply.

Normally, a person begins a job search by going online and browsing through posted jobs. A common platform that many people use to apply is job portals. Many people use a generic resume to make online applications. The next thing they do is to wait for a call from HR. If there are no calls, then they just repeat the first few steps. They submit more applications and wait.

This practice is rather unproductive. Online applications are not the best way to get great job opportunities. This is what happens when you rely on job portals. You send an online application but there is a huge possibility that it either gets lost or forgotten in the pile of other resumes. Usually, companies don’t get the chance to go through all the applications. This means that you were probably not called because you weren’t qualified but rather you were not called because your resume was not seen at all. If you spend all your time making online applications, then it’s time to develop a new strategy to find better employment. It’s time to let go of your old ways and habits. Seek other sources of job opportunities. Try looking into your network and see if there are available job openings. You can also try contacting hiring managers. There’s no harm in submitting a letter of interest to explore the possibility of joining an organization whether as a consultant or a full-time employee. As long as you know how to present yourself well and to utilize the right channels of communication, you can open doors and create opportunities for yourself.

If you only have one version of your resume to apply got all jobs, then you need to do something about that too. When you don’t optimize your resume, you fail to sell your best qualities to the hiring manager. The hiring manager might look at your resume and see that you have a lot of skills and experience. But what are the things that make you the best candidate? How do your qualifications relate to the kind of person that they’re looking for? Edit your resume with the goal in mind. Ask yourself: what are my experiences and achievements that best show my suitability for this position? Always keep that in mind.

Sometimes, having the most impressive set of skills or qualifications is not enough to obtain a great job opportunity. You need to have great strategies too. By combining these strategies with a positive mindset, you will be able to make notable progress in your search for a better employment.

Its scope is extremely limited and there’s a huge chance that your application doesn’t even get viewed by actual hiring managers.

Online applications are convenient. There’s no doubt about that. However, they probably won’t get you anywhere. You’ll end up sending more and more applications each day in hopes of getting called for an interview. But the truth is you’re just waiting for nothing. You don’t even know if the HR even got to look at your resume. It means that job opportunities usually exist in those companies but you just don’t know about it.

So, what do you need to do now that you know there are hidden opportunities in many organizations? This is where the letter of interest comes in. Basically, you approach the hiring manager and present them with your qualifications. It is even better if you can attach some sort of recommendation or reference from a reputable connection. In this letter, you discuss your interest in gaining a position in their company. Take note that you don’t just simply ask for a job. Mention the specific opportunity that you would like to explore in the company. You can also mention your career plans and why you are looking at their organization for possible employment. This letter does not guarantee that you will get a job. However, it will open doors for discussion and establish you as a potential candidate in case an opportunity arises.

If you decide that a letter of interest can be an effective method for you, then start drafting one today. Research and list down the hiring manager that you want to contact. Get To The Bottom Of Any Problem

At any given day, an organization faces a plethora of small issues and big problems. This just cannot be avoided no matter how stable the company is. Problems will always arise as long as the company is functioning. This is why no matter what the level of your position is, it always helps to have good problem solving skills.

Do you currently find yourself faced with a recurring problem at work? There are just some problems that are tricky to solve. Sometimes, a problem seems small at first but it actually has a major underlying cause which makes it so hard to solve.

Now, if you are faced with a problem, how do usually solve it? And what do you want to achieve? If your goal is to mitigate the issue almost permanently, then what you need is critical thinking skills.

Let’s use an example to further understand why critical thinking is important in problem solving or what does critical thinking mean.

For example, a company’s sales have been decreasing. Now there are many possible causes of this problem. The most obvious solution might be to do something about changing price points or enhancing product quality. However, you need to realize that the most obvious solution is not always the best one. In fact, it is rarely true that the most obvious solution is the one you actually need.

So in this case, you need to look at the bigger picture. Figure out the problem as a whole. It will help if you write down all the details of the issue and its implications. This is how you begin putting critical thinking to work.

And then, what’s next? After you’ve analyzed the problem, start asking questions. Asking a lot of questions will help you discover the real cause. So, if sales are going down, could there be something wrong with the product? Could there be something wrong with the selling platform? Is it possible that the customer management team is not reaching their goals? Is it possible that a competitor is doing something that the company failed to look out? There are so many possibilities that you might not even realize.

Once you look at the problem at hand from every possible perspective and asked all the good questions, then it will be easier to identify the real cause of the problem. And when the real cause is identified, then you can move forward in finding solutions to address it. You might be surprised that the best solution is something that you’ve never even thought about before.

When implementing the solution, it is important to do some monitoring as well. It is not advisable to simply implement the solution and expect it to work automatically. You still need to keep an eye on it and see if it is indeed achieving the results that you are expecting. If it’s not, then maybe you can consider alternative solutions.

The key to solving any problem is to get to the bottom of it. Whether at work or in your personal life, having critical thinking skills can help you diminish a problem before it gets worse.

Interview Questions About Your Long-term Plans

In a job interview, you will most probably be asked not only about your work history but about your future plans as well. This is how hiring managers determine if you are a potential long-term hire. It is also their way of knowing what you value and what you want to achieve in your career.

Today, I will talk about handling interview questions about your long-term plans. Many interviewees feel uncertain when it comes to answering those questions. This is usually because they don’t know how to organize their thoughts or maybe they don’t know what they really want to do in the future.

Relevance is important

Just like with all other interview questions, your answer here should be relevant. The goal of your answer is to help convince the hiring manager to pick you for the job. Even before the interview, think about what you want to do in the next five years. Think about the things you want to achieve in your career. And then, see where this job opportunity fits. Figure out why it is important and how it can help you achieve your goals. Remember that your answer should focus mainly on your career. So, if your long-term goal is to travel the world, then talking about that may not be the best idea. However, you can still mention your personal goals if you can tie it with your career plans. Watch the humor

There are some job applicants that try to inject to humor into their answers. They respond with statements like “In the next five years, my goal is to replace you as the manager.” It may seem like a rather humorous statement at first, but most hiring managers do not appreciate this. This can give them the impression that you are arrogant or you are not taking the interview question seriously. Save the humor for a more appropriate situation. If you try to seem funny or clever, then you might risk creating a negative impression and decreasing your chances of getting a job offer.

Honesty is important

Convincing the hiring managers are you are a potential long-term hire might be a tough task, but don’t be mistaken. You don’t need to oversell or over qualify yourself. It is not necessary to make your plans sound elaborate just so you’ll look suitable for the job. You can mention the company’s name but don’t overdo it. You don’t want to look like you’re trying too hard to get their attention. Honesty is always important. However, it does not mean that you should mention every single thing that you plan to do or achieve in the next five years. Like what was mention earlier, choose only the relevant information.
